To us, good beer is elementary. We take a scientific approach to the brewing process, respecting heritage and classic styles, while pushing the boundaries by embracing a healthy appetite for experimentation.
Above all, we believe in fresh, local and flavorful beer of the very best quality. We are having fun brewing up the future in Black Rock as the first brewery in Bridgeport since 1940!
We are open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays! We have 10+ beers on tap plus hard cider, hard seltzer, vodka cocktails and soft drinks. We always have neighboring restaurant The Blind Rhino providing table service with great food; and yes, we are family-friendly. Dogs are welcome outside-only. Our space is available for private events, so please contact us for your next party (capacity 50). Watch for additional special hours, promotions and events. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for news and updates. (www.facebook.com/aspetuckbrewlab).
Why Aspetuck?
The word Aspetuck can be translated as "river originating at the high place" in an Algonquin language. The water that serves as the base for our beers comes from the Aspetuck watershed, fed by the Aspetuck River in the hills of Redding and Easton, Connecticut. The river is one of the cleanest in the state and produces exceptional brewing water that allows us to brew fantastic beers across many different styles.
Peter Cowles, Founder/CEO/Chief Beer Scientist
At the Aspetuck Brew Lab, there is no shortage of excellent, award-winning beers. With 17 years of amateur brewing experience prior to starting the Brew Lab, founder and chief beer scientist Peter Cowles has racked up medals in some of the most prestigious and competitive brewing competitions in the US, including a Bronze Medal at GABF in the Saison category in 2019 for Gray Matter. Other accomplishments include winning 14 medals at the Great International Beer & Cider Competition over the past 7 years, including Gold in the Saison category twice, as well as Gold for Stout, Summer Ale and Barleywine. In 2021 at the Denver International Beer Competition, Turbidity Lucidity IPA won gold and Bramble Blackberry Sour won bronze! Along with 25+ years of marketing and business strategy experience and an MBA from The Stern School at NYU, he brings a creativity and energy to the Lab that will result in some of the most creative, flavorful and well-made beers available. Anywhere!
Tara Kasaks Cowles, Founder/COO
Aspetuck Brew Lab is a family run brewery. Tara was introduced to craft beer by Pete about 20 years ago when trips to Vermont often included stops at Magic Hat, Rock Art and later The Alchemist. Vacations always included visits to local breweries and conversations about the beer, the people, and the atmosphere. After a marketing career in New York City and Boston and about ten years at a local non-profit, she and Pete decided to stop talking about opening a brewery and start doing. You'll often see Tara running in and out of the taproom, planning events, delivering kegs, and doing paperwork!
